Blackbirds & Orioles Brown-headed Cowbird

Brown-headed Cowbird

Molothrus ater

malesThe male Brown-headed Cowbird has a dark brown head with a charcoal gray conical bill. His body is a glossy black.

females The female bird is grayish brown with light streaks along her breast. She has a dark gray conical bill and few distinguishing features, which makes her more difficult to discern than her male counterpart.

Female Cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. Feeders tend to not cater to the likings of the Cowbird for this reason.

Because this bird is parasitic on other species of birds, most bird lovers discourage them at feeders.

Cowbird Feed Prefrences

The Brown-headed Cowbird will eat a variety of seed mixes scattered throughout lawns, clearings and pastures.
