adultsThe Black-headed Grosbeak has a large, conical bill with yellow wing linings.

malesThe male bird has a deep orange breast, collar and underparts with a black head and upperparts. He also has white undertail coverts, white wing bars and wing patches, and white spots in his black tail. In the fall and winter the male becomes more dull and brown.

femalesThe female has dark gray upperparts with black and white crown stripes.

juvenilesThe immature bird will feature plumages similar to the adult female.
